Program Profile - VA Havoc

For this ZG Report, we had a chance to have a conversation with Chris Johnson, the program director of VA Havoc. Starting in 2014, VA Havoc was created to fill a void of travel basketball in the Richmond metro area. With a mission in mind to, “make basketball a memorable part of each athlete’s journey by providing a safe environment, where confidence in their athletic abilities can soar… We aim to promote the continued development of young players as it relates to fundamentals of basketball, sportsmanship and athletic competition”. VA Havoc wants to give their athletes the best chance to grow as a player, but they do not emphasize basketball as the number one priority over other areas of their young athlete’s lives.

Based out of Richmond, Virginia, VA Havoc has expanded over the years to different geographic locations of the state to expand their reach to young athletes. They now have teams in Virginia Beach, Roanoke, and Tidewater with a long-term goal to expand their program even more within the state of Virginia. VA Havoc provides opportunities to athletes of many ages including 3rd-12th grade for boys and 6th-11th grade for the girls.

When asked what the greatest accomplishments are and how the program has evolved over the years, Chris went on to explain that “being involved in turning a child’s life around from being a poor academic student and not being interested in school to having them graduate high school, play college basketball, attend college for academics, and having their players enter the workforce as productive citizens” is his greatest accomplishment as a program director. Providing a top-tier travel basketball experience is a major priority for the VA Havoc, but its great to see how much they look after their player’s well-being and future.

Chris went on to emphasize that their program tires to instill many morals into all of their players; hard work, determination, dedication, integrity, and respect. “The things that separate our program from others is the culture that we have in place which encourages development in the character and basketball skillset of the young men and women in our program”. VA Havoc is also heavily involved in their community during the holiday seasons. They participate in several food drives for Thanksgiving and gift drives for the needy during Christmas because they want their players to be involved in the well-being of their community.

Looking forward into 2021, we could not be more excited to have VA Havoc participate in our Mid-Atlantic Spring circuit! The program has grown rapidly throughout the state of Virginia over the past 6 years and we are excited to see what the future holds for this elite program. Zero Gravity is ecstatic to have the VA Havoc program join us on the road to the #ZGFinals!
